Kriega Does The Job

It’s not often that we go out of our way to lavish praise on a product – but when they deserve it as much as these Kriega rucksacks do, it would be rude not to.

I’ve been using a Kriega R35 for the last 6 years as my only everyday bit of luggage. It’s been half empty most days, stuffed to bursting point on the rest, and occasionally borne the extra merits of a US-10 or US-20 expansion pack. It’s been out in all weathers, all through the year, and I’ve conservatively estimated that it’s covered 125,000 miles strapped to my bulk. In all that time, distance, and abuse, it’s never let me down in any way. OK, so it’s not properly waterproof, but with a US-19 dry liner, your kit stays dry even if you end up in a lake. The general wear and tear of use has resulted in nothing more than a slighly furry bit of velcro on the front closure, and , er, nothing else of note. It’s incredible really.

With the average biker covering about 3,300 miles per year – and assuming Mr Average wore one of these every day – it would still be going strong after 37 years! Even for a Fast Bikes reader (who averages just under 6,000 miles per year) it’ll last over 20 years. I’d honestly be surprised if mine lasted less than the same distance again.

Nonetheless, I’ve opted for a new version to try and repeat the mileage. The R30 has a 100% waterproof main body with a six-point pack compression, and an innovative Quadloc harness – so once you’ve set the strap lengths, you just click in and out of it. There are two water-resistant outer zipped pockets and, as the name suggests, a 30 litre capacity. It comes with an amazing 10 year guarantee, and accepts the same optional 5 or 10 litre waterproof add-ons as the R35. I’ve been using it for about 8 weeks now, and have nothing but praise so far. I’ll give you a like-for-like update in 123,000 miles…

KTM Junior Motocross Bikes Stolen

A delivery of 36 new KTM junior motocross motorcycles has been stolen from a lorry in Kent on the evening of Friday December 9.

Thieves took 35 KTM 50 SXs and one 65 SX. The bikes were still in their individual transportation boxes, still requiring a small amount of assembly from the dealerships they were intended for. The 50 and 65 SX Sport Minicycles are incredibly popular motorcross machines for junior riders taking their first steps into off-road riding.

Each machine has a unique VIN (vehicle identification number) and engine number that can be used to trace its identity. Police and KTM dealers have these details and, together with KTM UK, will be working with motocross clubs and tracks across the country to make sure these stolen machines are returned. KTM 690 Duke Launch

Fagan grabbed the ticket to Gran Canaria for the official world launch of the new 2012 KTM 690 Duke – here’s his first impressions, and some video footage, ahead of the full launch report in next month’s issue.

Nearly 20 years after the original was released, KTM has launched the fourth-generation Duke. The previous incarnation of the 690 was bloody hard work, so the Austrians wanted to broaden its appeal with a more user-friendly approach. And they have.

Drive-by-wire is the highlight of its 90% new components, with a throttle unlike any other KTM – smooth and progressive. The LC4 mono-pot is also silkier and backs-up why the company persists with the single life.

Europe Want To Ban You From Modifying Your Bike

Yes, Europe is once again getting its banana-straighteners out, and suggesting plans to measure our sausages. But sadly, it’s not so comical this time.

Yes, it’s completely standard – and if the EU get their way,
modifying it would be illegal

Imagine being told that it’s illegal to fit different wheels, or a 520 chain conversion, or an end can / full system to your bike. You know – that thing which is your own property. What next? Will they be able to tell us we can’t ride on Sundays because that’s when most bikers fall off? Or maybe it’ll be illegal to accelerate unless you’re bolt upright. Well, on Monday the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) committee voted through stringent proposals for the regulation, approval and market surveillance of motorcycles, three wheelers and quadricycles. The upshot of which is that modifying your bike could be rendered illegal.

The IMCO committee vote is an early stage of the legislative process and is in effect a recommendation to the European Parliament. If the European Parliament take the same view, it would mean that from 2014, measures to prevent power-train modifications (by the user that may have adverse effects on safety or the environment) must be devised and applied by manufacturers and also that owners must present their motorcycles for inspection after carrying out ‘substantial’ modifications ‘by the competent authorities’. It would also mean that as from 2016, tighter emission laws would apply and all machines would have to be fitted with ABS, not just those over 125cc as previously tabled.

The European Parliament final vote will be held in the New Year but on the positive side say the BMF, IMCO chairman Malcolm Harbour will conduct an impact assessment dealing with timelines, emission limits, ABS and anti-tampering measures, the outcome of which is expected to influence the European Parliament’s final vote.

Speaking after the vote, Chris Hodder, the BMF’s Government Relations Executive said: “Rather than protecting the right to enjoy their property, IMCO MEPs are recommending that it be curtailed. Some requirements such as those for durability and improved access to repair and maintenance information are good, but others that restrict the owners right to adapt and modify their own machines strike at the very core of motorcycling and are totally unnecessary.”

The BMF is now stepping up its lobbying of UK Government and MEPs through its membership of FEMA, the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations. A detailed report on the IMCO vote will soon be available on the FEMA website.
