The massive event takes place on the 7th and 8th May, and the Thundersprint organisers have just confirmed that insurance supremos Bennetts have taken title sponsorship for 2011. So not only will there be some fine metal to look at, there’ll also be the Bennetts Babes on hand to brighten your day!

With Cal Crutchlow, Danny Webb, Steve Parrish and Matt Roberts all confirmed and taking part – the Thundersprint will have a real MotoGP feel this year. And as if that wasn’t enough, several members of the Fast Bikes team will be on hand to hold your jacket while you get autographs from proper celebrities and racers!

There are eleven classes in the sprint, ranging from pre-war to post classic and sidecar. The cavalcade is open to bikes, and riders, of all ages. Thundersprint organiser Frank Melling said: “We have a fantastic entry of motorcycling superstars but we welcome enthusiasts just as warmly. What we particularly need are riders who are spectator friendly and are willing to share their love of motorcycling with the tens of thousands of fans who pack Northwich every year. A big smile, a nice bike and a willingness to chat to spectators is far more important than being fast. Riders will share the same paddock and track as MotoGP stars Cal Crutchlow and Danny Webb and classic icons Jim Redman and Sammy Miller.”

The Thundersprint Cavalcade is one the great British bike events, with over 200 cavalcaders and racers taking to the streets of Northwich for three laps of the town, and a full day of aural and visual hedonism on the track. Make sure you’re there to soak it all up.

I always intended to race the Slabby, but I thought it’d be finished well in time, and that I’d have had the chance to test it thoroughly and iron out any little niggles before race weekend. I was wrong.

I still raced it on Sunday though.  I hadn’t even started the motor for over two weeks. I’d never ridden it. It was on brand news tyres, and had brand new brake pads all round. I didn’t even know if there were other gears in the ‘box than first, or if the clutch – unused for ten years – would take any level of abuse.

As I lined up behind my fellow competitors I was expecting the nerves to really kick in. A brief look around revealed a crowd you’d normally be impressed to see at a BSB meeting, so I concentrated on the Tarmac, and the back of the rider in front of me – a mad man called Hanus, astride an immense CBX. Then it was my turn.

After my three circuits,  I found out I’d done a 26.59, knocking five seconds off my qualifying time.

More impressive was the Slabby. It hadn’t been prepped, it wasn’t ready to be ridden, let alone raced – and hadn’t been ridden in ten years. In fact it’d only been started four times in ten years, all in the last two months. I’m blown away by that. Seven people tried to buy it off me on the day, and one chap even sent his wife to try and convince me after I told him ‘no’ at least ten times in as many minutes. What a brilliant bike.

Chris Walker, by the way, caned me with a 21.87 on his Norton, and Stavros did a 24.39 on his 2010 R1. Technically, I did beat Danny Webb – but he may not have been taking it very seriously…

Thundersprint time is nearly upon us yet again – so make sure you stick the date in your diary, and come and join Alastair and Moby as they make their annual pilgrimage to Northwich to wazz around trying to win the thing (Alastair) or just to wave at his adoring fans (Moby).

The weekend of the 8th/9th May is the date for your diary, and all you need to do is just turn up. Entrance is free, there’s loads of action on track and plenty to see off it too. A more friendly event you’re not likely to attend and you really can’t get much closer to the action or get more for your money.

The Thundersprint is one of the biggest bike events in Europe, but maintains its original ethos of bringing racing, personalities, race legends and the smells and sounds of iconic machinery as close to the showgoers as possible. The Thundersprint is for everyone – young, old, hardcore race fans, classic enthusiasts or simply anyone wanting an excellent day’s entertainment

Despite being a world class event attracting in excess of 140,000 showgoers over the Thundersprint weekend, admission is free, and so is parking (in Vale Royal Borough Council controlled parking areas, signposted into Northwich from every direction).

It’s one hell of an event, and a firm favourite of the FB team – come along and say hello, and enjoy a weekend of sublime noise, exhaust fumes and thrilling action.
