This will take you back to the days of low power, wobbly chassis, and dodgy brakes. Of course Frank Melling’s Walmsley Matchless G.50, while only wringing a little less than 50bhp from the massive single piston thumper, actually handles beautifully – and brakes rather well too.

If you fancy a cheap(ish) way in to racing, you could do a lot worse than to consider the classic scene. It’s awash with genuinely nice people, there’s a glut of great bikes out there ready to go (from as little £2,500 for something worth racing), and you can take it as seriously as you want to. A G.50 will set you back quite a wedge though. Put it this way, an ex-WSB or BSB bike will cost you half as much. (If you don’t know what a G.50 is – have a read of this.)

Frank runs the world-famous Thundersprint, which Fast Bikes attends every year, and the Thunderfest too – which is in a couple of week’s time at Darley Moor (18th September).

Big grins and the smell of Castrol R on the air… It’s like heaven, but closer.

C.I. Cannonball

Hi folks, you may remember me posting a video of a chap blatting around my old home-town of Jersey a couple of months back. I also hoped that said chap may conjure up a video of the route none of us ever used, at all, ever, of our own version of the Cannonball Run.

This run, which of course never happened, would be from one phonebox on one side of the island, to another at the opposing end. It would have, ideally, been run in the early hours at night to avoid the rozzers. And the most used route took these imaginary contestants along the north side, seeing as the south is far too built up as it passes through the major towns. That’s not to say a few, crazy, fellas never tried it though. Big, huge imaginary balls on those guys I can tell you!

A good time would have been around the twelve-minute mark, had this ever taken place.

And I’ve found a vid of just such a route, coincidentally, which is amusingly sped-up for our viewing pleasure. You can see it HERE.

Though remember, folks, that unsanctioned time-trials on the road are illegal and very, very naughty, so don’t!

As for me, that was long, long ago, but I seem to remember a set of fairy-tale numbers from my past, something like 11:51 sticks in my mind, but to this day I have no clue why, or what they mean. Ahem…

Seeing as the racing’s finished an we have nowt but re-runs of this season to watch, how about some old-school morning glory, with a natty compilation of some great action from the 1990′s boys, the ‘Golden Era’ to pump us up for the day?

We don’t tend to like music on bike videos usually, but on something like this we’ll let that go just this once. Find here many memorable moments lots of you will remember. For those that don’t, maybe it’ll inpsire you to get on Duke’s website and cherry-pick some of those great seasons from 1988 -1993 and finally twig what everyone’s been banging on about. That said, any of those years is awesome/ Pig. In. Shit.

Nice Angle

Here’s a clip of Oliver Holmes recently setting a new record up Bouley Bay Hillclimb in Jersey, BJ’s old stomping ground. We think he’s on a KTM something-or-other, but one thing not in doubt is that the boy’s flying! Oh, and at least six-seconds faster than Beej ever went up there, snigger. But that was almost 20-years ago so we’ll let him off, though it’s still rather funny.

The best bit about this clip is the position of the camera, and while we’ve seen similar on the telly at GP’s and whatnot, this is beautifully dynamic and you can spend the entire run just watching how the front-tyre grips the road and deforms under load.
