Tried & Tested – Garmin VIRB

Say hello to the Garmin VIRB: a 1080p HD camera with a 16-megapixel CMOS processor and a tidy, easy to use hi-res colour display. We featured the VIRB in the products section of current issue but hadn’t tested it. Now we have.

The onboard camera market is saturated with all shapes and sizes, and there’s a lot of overpriced tat available. Thankfully, the VIRB is a welcome addition with a crisp picture and a super-easy functionality. The neatest feature is the easy-record on/off slider on the side of the camera. Even with the power off, just slide the, erm, slider and it’ll start recording. A great non-faff job that can be done with gloves on and makes a mockery of some other cameras.

Purveyors of fine satellite navigation systems, Garmin have built a sturdy camera and a beautiful mounting structure: probably the best in the game. Utilising a similar mount as their sat-navs, the VIRB easily clips in and out of its main fitting and uses de rigueur sticky pads for bike or helmet.  There are other mounts available as extras.

The only slight gripe we have is the noise, or rather wind noise. It doesn’t like excess speed but the VIRB is not as bad as others we’ve sampled. All in all, a quality piece of onboard kit, awesome mounting and a very stable picture. It’s £269.99, uses a micro SD card and should last up to 3 hours on the hoof.
